The Hyacinth Macaw Project involves research, management, and conservation of the species. In carrying out these objectives, biologists, veterinarians, field workers, ranchers, and university students share in activities ranging from technical studies on reproduction, behavior, and habitat to environmental education.

With their bright blue feathers and yellow-ringed eyes, the hyacinth macaw is both visually stunning as well as being the largest flying parrot with wingspans exceeding 4 feet. Tragically, their beauty contributed to a massive illegal trade. In the 1980s alone, at least 10,000 birds were taken from the wild for pets. During this era, Neiva Guedes, a 27-year-old biology student, was touring Brazil’s Pantanal ecosystem. As a flock of these macaws flew by, her professor lamented they would likely be extinct in their lifetime - as few as 2,500 remained. That moment changed Neiva’s life forever - and the future of the hyacinth macaw.

By 1990, Neiva had started the Hyacinth Macaw Project, known locally as Projeto Arara Azul. Today, the project covers nearly one million acres. Best of all, the hyacinth macaw population has more than doubled to 6,500. Despite the difficulties, Neiva remains full of passion. The challenge is for the rest of us to help her fulfill a shared vision where future generations can still be as inspired as she was by flocks of these bright blue macaws flying freely above the forests of South America.
