Hoofstock Keeper

Applicants are required to have a 4 year college degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field: or an equivalent level of work experience and education as determined by Naples Zoo and at least 2 years working as a paid keeper in an AZA accredited institution.

Duties include animal husbandry, operant conditioning and enrichment, as well as some diet preparation, record keeping, exhibit maintenance, public speaking and other duties as assigned by the General Curator. Candidates must have good observation and record keeping skills, an excellent safety record, a strong work history and be a team player as well as working on their own. This position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds, work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays. Successful candidates must maintain a valid driver’s license, have a recent negative TB test, and pass a drug test.

Registrar

This position manages Animals Records and ensures the maintenance and quality of animal records for use in the management and development of husbandry and breeding programs, preparation of scientific publications and provision of data for cooperative ventures at both regional and international levels.  The Registrar serves as a liaison and information source to other departments and organizations including veterinarians.  This position provides a complete inventory and record of all animal transactions.  He or she must monitor legislation for compliance with wildlife laws. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as principal advisor to the Director of Animal Programs and President/CEO on registration and collections management, adherence to collections management policy and on legal and logistical aspects of collections activities.
  • Participates with administrative, curatorial and other support staff in implementing and reviewing various collection management objectives, setting and developing policy and procedures.
  • Monitors collection activity for compliance with policy and procedure and advises General Curator and Executive Director on problems and progress.
  • Prepares reports on collections activity and management to the General Curator other institutional officials as scheduled on own initiative.
  • Monitors status of legislation pertaining to wildlife and transport procedures.
  • Sets procedures for domestic and international shipments of live animals, parts and products.
  • Checks legal regulations and zoo policies for compliance, directs document preparation, logistics planning, scheduling and quarantine for animal shipments.
  • Establishes and implements documentation standards for shipment records with advice of legal counsel and curatorial staff in coordination with national and international standards and requirements.
  • Develops and directs the collection and maintenance of an inventory of the zoo’s animal collection, and records of daily transactions including shipments, births and deaths, behavioral, reproductive and medial notes.  Reports these activities to the administrative, curatorial and appropriate staff.
  • Develops procedures and systems for inventory control of the collection via automated and manual systems. Reviews record-keeping and transaction procedures, implementing improvements to standards of records management.
  • Develops and implements internal and external quality control measures to ensure the quality of institutional animal records data.
  • Serves as liaison to the International Species Information System (ISIS), submits data to this system, and analyzes and disseminates data received from this system.
  • Serves as a liaison between the institution and outside organizations/institutions, as well as other departments within the zoo on matters of animal records and related issues.
  • Works with the General Curator and keepers through education/training programs and regular contact to improve record systems and solve problems.
  • Provides institution data for studbook reports, questionnaires, surveys and Species Survival Plan updates, or directs to appropriate staff members.
  • Composes loan agreements with administrative, curatorial and legal staff, and monitors the status of loan specimens.
  • Performs genealogy searches for use in the selection of appropriate specimens for breeding/exhibit for in-house populations as well as proposed incoming animals.
  • Monitors SSP, TAG, FIG and various national as well as international programs to assist in the long-term management and development of captive management programs, and the preservation of endangered species.

Public Relations/Events Manager                                                           

SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for enhancing public awareness and goodwill along with the overall image for Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens by developing and administering a comprehensive public relations campaign including public events and promotions in and outside the Zoo.

SUPERVISION:
Work is performed under the direction of the Director of Conservation and Communications who works offsite. Daily contact is maintained through video conferencing and phone calls in addition to the Director’s regular site visits. Additional guidance is received through established policies and procedures, plus verbal and written communications.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: This position requires at least 3 years of relevant public relations experience.  Previous experience working in an attraction or wildlife-oriented field is preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and implement a comprehensive public relations program that ensures Naples Zoo remains top-of-mind locally while building the regional and national image across all media platforms including regular updates on social media.
  • Draft and edit press releases and by-line articles consistent with Naples Zoo mission and ethos.
  • Cultivate and maintain media contacts and relationships. This is primarily local and regional and may expand to national level.
  • Maintain and expand referral program with regional hotels and related properties.
  • Acquire and review editorial calendars and manage process to help ensure the Zoo appears in appropriate features.
  • Function as a Zoo spokesperson as needed.
  • Develop, plan and execute all press previews, opening ceremonies, media events, as well as promotional and themed events (Save the Panther Day, Boo at the Zoo, Int’l Migratory Bird Day, Party for the Planet), etc.
  • Attend relevant in-Zoo events as well as regional third-party meetings, i.e. concierge, lodging, chambers of commerce, etc.
  • Communicate with Zoo personnel to remain up to date on current and upcoming events, cultivate story ideas, and provide support for all Zoo programs and departments.
  • Assist with development and execution of crisis communication plan.
  • Inform Zoo staff of public relations efforts and activities in a timely manner.
  • Track public relations efforts; provide analysis of effectiveness.
  • Plan and coordinate Naples Zoo member newsletter and e-newsletter including writing or editing some stories and acquiring images as needed.
  • Plan and post social media and maintain contact with public in these forums.
  • Support the Director of Conservation & Communications in the planning, development and execution of all Zoo related communications.
  • Perform other duties as required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, set up and take down equipment, stand for long periods of time, ride a bicycle, and drive Zoo golf carts and vehicles.

Primate Expedition Cruise Guide
This position will work under the direction of the Park Services Manager. The Expedition Guide must possess the ability to learn how to navigate a 32ft catamaran through a primate inhabited island system, narrating a 20 minute tour offering insight into primate behavior and conservation. This person must be comfortable dealing with the general public and able to communicate in a personable way to large audiences. The guide is required to interact with individual guests as well, and answer animal and nature related questions. Personal knowledge of animals, especially primates is a definite plus but not a requirement. Prior boating experience is preferred.

The Expedition Guide's duties include but are not limited to:

•  Ability to work as a team player with other guides and zoo personnel and to appreciate the need for all to maintain cleanliness of the zoo grounds and marine facilities.

•  Acting as a source of information for guests in relation to zoo activities.

•  Monitoring for inappropriate guest behavior to protect the park and animals.

•  Providing audience control and monitoring shows with carnivores and venomous snakes to ensure the safety of guests and animal handlers.

•  The use of a leaf blower to clean park entrance, show areas, and sidewalks.

•  Cleaning of dock area, including boats.

•  Trash pick-up throughout zoo grounds.

Weekend hours are typically required.

This position requires a flexible work schedule and the ability to work weekends and some holidays if needed.

A recent tetanus shot and drug screening are required prior to acceptance. EOE. Drug free workplace. Benefits package.

Public Area Park Attendant

This position helps insure a quality guest experience. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist zoo guests by answering questions
  • Monitor all trash receptacles throughout zoo grounds
  • Cleaning of playground areas
  • Cleaning of park benches on zoo pathways
  • Clean zoo signs and graphics
  • Clean Jungle Relief Station restrooms
  • Monitor restroom cleanliness during open hours
  • Clean picnic tables
  • Remove litter from zoo pathways
  • Assume crowd control during Safari Canyon shows
  • Clean rental strollers
  • Clean coin machines
  • Remove litter from show area following each presentation
  • Parking cars during peak periods

QUALIFICATIONS

Requires a High School Diploma or the equivalent. The Park Attendant must be self-motivated and work independently without supervision.

Must have a general knowledge of basic cleaning procedures, possess a current Florida Driver's License, operate a golf cart, have the ability to work outdoors, and have a recent tetanus shot.

The Park Attendant is directly responsible to the Park Services Manager.

The scheduled hours for are part time and to be assumed by several staff members.

This position requires a flexible work schedule and the ability to work weekends and some holidays if needed.

Giraffe Feeding Station Supervisor                                                 
Reporting to the Volunteer Coordinator, this position requires a friendly, outgoing, and patient disposition at all times.  The Giraffe Feeding Station supervisor must be able to handle cash transactions and supervise staff.  The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the feeding station run smoothly and includes supervising giraffe feeding station staff and volunteers, coordinating food re-orders, training and scheduling of staff/volunteers, and other duties as needed.  He or she needs to have a basic knowledge of mammals, avians and reptiles in a zoological environment.  This person also needs to stay updated on all of the park history, daily schedule, and special events.

This position requires a flexible work schedule and the ability to work weekends and some holidays if needed.
